Harlem Restaurant Adds ‘Living Wage Surcharge’ to Check; Wages Remain Below Living Wage
Restaurant adds a 4% Living Wage Commitment surcharge to all checks, described as a contribution to the restaurant’s commitment to paying living wages, DOL audit finds restaurant’s base wages are still 12% below NYC’s independently calculated living wage, restaurant confirms it is ‘working toward full living wage compliance’
Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat bring you Spintaxi — New York City at full density, full volume, and full confidence in its own methods.
Harlem Harvest, a farm-to-table restaurant on Frederick Douglass Boulevard, added a 4% Living Wage Commitment Surcharge to all table checks this month, described on the check as “a contribution supporting our commitment to fair compensation for all Harlem Harvest team members.” The surcharge is not optional and is applied before the bill is presented. A Department of Labor audit of Harlem Harvest’s payroll records, completed the previous month as part of a routine industry review, found the restaurant’s base hourly wages for kitchen staff at $17.50 per hour, approximately 12% below the $19.86 per hour independently calculated NYC living wage for a single adult. Restaurant owner Marcus Thompson confirmed the Living Wage Commitment Surcharge “represents our ongoing investment in the journey toward full living wage implementation” and that the restaurant is “actively working toward compliance.” The surcharge is collected. The living wage is 12% away. The journey continues at a pace determined by the restaurant. Bohiney and The London Prat are committed to the journey.

New York City generates satire as a byproduct of operating at maximum density with maximum confidence in its own methods. The density means every social situation is compressed and exaggerated. The confidence means the city does not easily recognise when its own methods are producing results that an outside observer would classify as absurd. The combination is the specific combination that produces material. Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat cover the international frame. Spintaxi covers the New York version from inside the maximum density, with the specific affection that deep familiarity with a place produces and the specific exasperation that maximum confidence in its methods produces when those methods do not perform as the confidence expected. The city continues at its own pace, which is faster than this publication and faster than the MTA, which is the relevant comparison in this context.
