Central Park Installs Selfie Tolls
Vanity has a price
According to reports, NYC has started charging tourists and influencers $5 every time they snap a selfie in Central Park. Special sensors now detect duck-face poses, peace signs, and ring-light reflections. “This is revenue innovation,” said a city spokesperson, holding up a selfie stick confiscated from a tourist.
The new system has already caused chaos. Couples trying to capture romantic moments were hit with $20 fees after retaking their shots under better lighting. Joggers accidentally triggered fines just by stretching near the Bethesda Fountain. A group of TikTok dancers racked up $400 in charges after rehearsing their choreography for two hours.
Reactions vary. Some applaud the policy: “At least the citys finally taxing vanity.” Others rage: “I paid $3,000 for my DSLR just to get mugged by Big Brother.” Street performers have adapted by offering “illegal selfie zones” behind bushes, charging $2 per picture under the table.
TikToks #SelfieTax is trending: influencers sobbing as their Venmo balances drain in real time, pranksters photoshopping fake toll sensors onto squirrels, and viral hacks showing how to disguise selfies as “bird photography.” Vendors now sell “selfie insurance” policies outside park entrances.
Tabloids snapped. The Post headlined: “MUGGED BY SELFIE.” The Daily News countered: “VANITY FAIR.”
Mayor Adams praised: “This is the future of fiscal selfies.” Governor Hochul muttered: “If Buffalo tries this, Im banning cameras.”
