MTA Announces BYO Subway Seats Policy

Bring your own cushion

According to reports, the MTA has unveiled a bold new plan: passengers must now bring their own subway seats. “We’re cutting costs and encouraging creativity,” said an MTA spokesperson. Riders can bring folding chairs, beanbags, or even yoga mats for the morning rush. “We just ask that you don’t block the doors with your La-Z-Boy.”

Commuters are adapting quickly. One rider hauled a hammock between two poles, another balanced on a barstool, and a TikTok influencer dragged a throne with LED lights. “It’s like the world’s saddest furniture expo,” said one passenger. Still, many praise the move: “At least I can sit in comfort instead of someone’s armpit.”

Critics worry it will worsen crowding. “The Q train looked like an Ikea clearance aisle today,” complained one rider. But the MTA insists BYO seating boosts morale and ridership. “If you spill coffee on your couch, that’s on you,” officials said.

TikTok’s #BYOSeat trend features subway car interiors transformed into living rooms. A viral clip captured a couple eating dinner at a full dining table on the 6 train while mariachi buskers performed beside them.

Tabloids folded. “CHAIR RAGE” screamed the Post. The Daily News countered: “SEATING ARRANGEMENTS.”

Mayor Adams praised it as “commuter innovation.” Governor Hochul muttered, “If I see a futon on the F train, I’m banning upholstery.”
