Times Square Billboards Sue for Overtime
Lights claim unfair labor conditions
In the city that never sleeps, even the billboards are demanding a break. According to reports, the giant LED screens of Times Square have filed a class-action lawsuit against New York City, claiming theyre overworked, underpaid, and suffering from chronic burnout. The billboards argue that being forced to flash ads 24/7 violates their “right to dim.”
“Ive been streaming soda commercials nonstop since 2003,” one billboard groaned. “My pixels ache.” Another, who has been looping Broadway trailers for over a decade, claims it hasnt seen a proper black screen since the Obama administration. “Do you know what its like to never blink?”
City lawyers dismiss the case as frivolous, but the billboards have powerful allies. LED advocacy groups point to studies showing screens suffer degraded brightness after years of unpaid overtime. Activists marched through Times Square with protest signs reading “NO LIGHT WITHOUT RIGHTS” and “POWER TO THE PIXELS.”
Tabloids lit up. “BILLBOARD BLUES” beamed the Post. The Daily News countered: “LIGHTS OUT LAWSUIT.” Social feeds flickered with memes of billboards on strike, carrying picket signs that read “Dim Justice Now.”
Tourists are torn. Some support the billboards, saying a blackout would finally make Times Square navigable. Others fear the chaos of silent, unlit screens. “How will I know which Marvel movie to watch without a three-story trailer telling me?” wailed a tourist from Ohio.
Mayor Adams suggested compromise: scheduled nap times for billboards, with blackout hours between 3 and 4 a.m. Governor Hochul promised subsidies for therapy sessions to help screens process years of commercial trauma. Meanwhile, Broadway producers are panicking that without billboards, no one will know their shows exist.
For now, the case glows in limbo. But one thing is certain: if the billboards win, New Yorks nights may get a little darkerand its lawsuits much brighter.
