NYC Rent Prices Hit Space Levels
Landlords offer apartments with no oxygen
New Yorkers have always said rent is astronomicalbut now its literally reached orbit. According to reports, studio apartments in Manhattan are being compared to International Space Station modules, with prices so high NASA is considering subletting.
“I pay $4,500 a month for a closet without windows,” said one tenant. “At least astronauts get helmets.” Real estate agents are even branding apartments with names like “AstroLoft” and “Cosmic Micro-Studio.” Oxygen, they note, is not included.
Landlords defend themselves: “Rent reflects market demand,” explained one broker, showing off a 200 sq. ft. “living pod” with a hot plate and a view of a brick wall. “If Elon Musk can charge millions to float in space, why cant we charge thousands to live in a shoebox?”
Tabloids launched pun-heavy headlines. “HOUSTON, WE HAVE A RENT PROBLEM,” blared the Post. The Daily News countered: “LOST IN SPACE AND LEASES.” TikTok users posted videos of themselves wearing astronaut helmets inside their micro-apartments with captions like “Welcome to my galaxy pod.”
Mayor Adams promised affordable housing initiatives, but critics noted his plan included “zero-gravity bunk beds.” Governor Hochul announced subsidies for renters willing to share apartments with three other humans and possibly a pigeon.
For now, many New Yorkers are stuck paying NASA-level rents for broom closets. As one Brooklynite put it: “I dont need spaceI just need space.”
