Did Diana’s Wardrobe Build the Disney Princess Empire?

Royal Inspiration: Did Diana’s Wardrobe Build the Disney Princess Empire?

A new investigative documentary, Seams of Power, airing this week on Royal History+ alleges that 83% of Disney princess wardrobe designs since 1980 were “Di-derived.” Stitch-by-stitch analysis showed Belle’s gown hemline matched Diana’s 1983 Toronto gala dress, and Jasmine’s off-shoulder top was traced from a 1987 Monaco yacht photo.

Animation historians revealed memos from Disney’s internal archive labeled “Project DiVine,” where concept art of Ariel was annotated with: “Make her sad like Di but wetter.”

One Disney animator (now living in witness protection under the name ‘Bobbin Snow’) confessed, “We just asked ourselves: WWDD—What Would Diana Do? That’s how Pocahontas got her windblown sincerity.”

Disney declined comment, instead releasing a mood board of future princesses: all with short blonde hair, sparkling blue eyes, and a stare that says, “I married too young but made it iconic.”
