Brooklyn Hipsters Declare Sovereignty
Craft beer becomes official currency
Brooklyn hipsters have officially declared independence from New York City, forming the “Peoples Republic of Williamsburg.” According to reports, their constitution is printed on recycled tote bags and their national anthem is a 45-minute vinyl-only drone track.
The fledgling nations currency? Craft beer cans, valued by bitterness scale and brewery rarity. “A double hazy IPA is worth two rent payments,” explained Minister of Beards, holding a mason jar passport. Coffee beans serve as secondary coinage, but only if single-origin and roasted on a Tuesday.
Borders are guarded by fixie bike patrols, while all citizens are required to own at least one ironic sweater. Their flag: a Polaroid of a tattooed barista pouring oat milk into a Chemex. Foreign policy focuses on trade deals with Portland and Austin.
Tabloids gasped. “BROOKLYN BREAKUP” declared the Post. The Daily News countered: “HIPSTERLAND RISING.” Social feeds flooded with TikToks of hipsters pledging allegiance with pour-over coffee in hand. #HipsterNation briefly trended, sponsored by Etsy.
Mayor Adams dismissed the move as “pretentious cosplay,” but Governor Hochul warned secession could drive up avocado toast tariffs. Real estate brokers, however, celebrated, announcing Williamsburg lofts will now come with dual citizenship paperwork.
Whether this republic lasts longer than a flash-mob kombucha tasting remains to be seen. For now, Brooklyn hipsters are united under one creed: “No Wi-Fi, no peace.”
