Broadway Actors Strike Over Encore Fatigue

Claim audiences clap too aggressively

Times Square is dimmer than usual: reports confirm Broadway actors are striking over “encore fatigue,” insisting audiences clap too aggressively and demand endless curtain calls that leave performers trapped in a Groundhog Day of bowing.

“I signed up to sing, not to dislocate my spine bowing 27 times a night,” said one exhausted Phantom of the Opera understudy. Actors claim post-show applause has spiraled into a cardio workout. “I burned more calories bowing than doing Hamilton’s choreography,” lamented another.

The actors’ union is demanding strict encore limits: no more than two bows per performance, with penalties for audiences clapping in rhythm. Ushers are being retrained to drag standing ovation enthusiasts back into their seats after 15 seconds of applause. Violators may be fined in Playbill coupons.

Tourists are devastated. “I flew here from Iowa just to clap for 20 minutes,” sobbed one fan in line for Wicked. Meanwhile, scalpers are selling “Encore Tickets” on Craigslist, guaranteeing exclusive access to third bows.

Tabloids bowed to the story. “BROADWAY WON’T BOW DOWN” cried the Post. The Daily News countered: “OVATION NATION SPLITS.” Social media feeds filled with memes of actors wearing neck braces after standing ovations. TikTok users launched the challenge #OneBowOnly, posting videos of themselves bowing once and storming off.

Mayor Adams, asked for comment, said, “As long as they keep jazz hands alive, I’ll clap respectfully.” Governor Hochul promised mediation by attending every show and clapping “at a medium volume.” Producers warn the strike could cost billions, though many actors secretly admit they just want to catch their trains before 2 a.m.

For now, Broadway bows less, sighs more. As one actor whispered before collapsing backstage: “Standing ovations are killing us softly—with applause.”
